The United Federation of Planets (UFP) is an interstellar union of multiple planetary political entities gathered undere a singular central government. It was founded upon the principles of liberty, equality, peace, justice, and progress with the purpose of furthering the universal rights of all sentient life. Members of the Federation exchange knowledge and resources to facilitate peaceful cooperation, scientific development, space exploration, and mutual defense.

One of the largest and most powerful interstellar states within in known space, encompassing eight thousand light years. Over one hundred and fifty planets had joined by the 24th Century, rising to around 350 member worlds by the 31sth Century. Unlike rival imperial rivals, the Klingon Empire and the Romulan Star Empire who gained power by subjugating other races, the Federation's various member worlds join voluntarily and are equals in the Federation's democratic society.
