The Federation's government has been designed as that of a federal constitutional republic, with many of its facilities being located on Earth. Its constituent members delegate some of their sovereignty, participating in a legislature known as the Federation Council. Within this structure, they elect the Federation President. The third balancing factor is the judiciary headed by the Federation Supreme Court. The Federation places great value on member worlds maintaining local sovereignty over their local affairs, maintaining embassies on other member worlds to help facilitate it. Member worlds are left to manage their own governance in accordance to their own tradition and local laws as long as the general requirements of membership are met. (This is similar to how the member states are ran within the European Union today). However, Federation law does grant the government emergency authority to override local governance and the ability to declare martial law on a member state's territory.
