Ship History

The name for our ship was chosen to honor all the members in the LGBTQIA+ community. Alan Turing was a
pioneering English computer scientist, mathematician, logician, crypt-analyst and theoretical biologist. He was
highly influential in the development of theoretical computer science, providing a formalization of the  concepts of algorithm and computation with the Turing machine, which can be considered a model of a general-purpose computer. During the Second World War, Turing worked for the Government Code and Cypher School (GC&CS) at Bletchley Park, Britain's code breaking center. Turing is widely considered to be the father of theoretical computer science and artificial intelligence. Turing played a pivotal role in cracking intercepted coded messages that enabled the Allies to defeat the Nazis in many crucial engagements, including the Battle of the Atlantic; it has been estimated that this work shortened the war in Europe by as many as four years.

In 1952 Turing was prosecuted for homosexual acts, when such behavior was still a criminal act in the UK. He accepted treatment with DES (chemical castration) as an alternative to prison. Turing died in 1954, 16 days before his 42nd birthday, from cyanide poisoning. An inquest determined his death as suicide, but it has been noted that the known evidence is equally consistent with accidental poisoning. In 2009, following an Internet campaign, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown made an official public apology on behalf of the British government for "the appalling way he was treated." Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous pardon in 2013. By choosing Alan Turing to be our namesake, we honor his memory, and the memory all of those that have died because of who they were.

The USS Alan Turing is founded on the principle of IDIC, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Creation, with the purpose of giving a fandom home to those that identify within the LGBTQIA+ umbrella, those with any sort of disability, really anyone that has ever felt like they don’t fit in. We celebrate everyone regardless of sexuality, gender identity, race, disability, or religion. Any person is welcome aboard the Alan Turing, and we strive to make fandom accessible to everyone!

The STARFLEET International chapter of the USS Alan Turing originally launched from Laramie Wyoming, on October 12, 2016. The ship was launched by Captain Jessica Ackerson as a shuttle from the USS Aarushi, a ship of the line in the 17th Fleet. She chose Shane Coble as her Executive Officer, and they have built a ship that is strong, inclusive, and a lot of fun! In November of 2020, the USS Alan Turing joined the 12th Fleet under the command  of Captain Shane Coble. In June of 2023, Captain Yolonda Whitworth stepped into the command with the untimely loss of Fleet Captain Shane Coble, with Commander Jessica Ackerson stepping into the role of Executive Officer and Commander James Sheldon as Second Officer.
